2025 Commemoration Recap

Dwight Eisenhower’s 135th birthday anniversary was commemorated at the Eisenhower Society’s annual statue ceremony and luncheon. Members Joined us for activities on Saturday, October 11 at 12 Noon by the Eisenhower at Gettysburg statue outside the Eisenhower Admissions Building at Gettysburg College. Readings from Eisenhower’s memoirs, brief comments by Society officials, and a wreath laying will occured at the site. The Eisenhower Memorial and the Robert M. Hoffman Family Trust Scholarships were presented to four Gettysburg College students. The Eisenhower Society ROTC Leadership Award was also presented to an outstanding ROTC cadet.

At 1 p.m. all were welcomed to gather for luncheon at the Dobbin House. The buffet menu included Chicken Coq Au Vin, Baked Ham with Pineapple Raisin Sauce, and Penne Pasta and Tomato Sauce. Vegetables include Rice Pilaf, Oven Roasted Potatoes, Buttered Dilled Carrots, and Green Beans Almondine. A 25-item salad bar, fresh baked breads, and desserts included Fudge Brownies, Blueberry Trifle, Gingerbread with Lemon Sauce and Colonial Pudding Cake was also available. The price was $35 a person. Luncheon registration ended at 12 noon on Monday October 6.

After lunch, our featured speaker was Professor Brian Black of Penn State University/Altoona. An authority on American environmental history, Professor Black spoke on “Ike’s Road Trip,” the title of his recent book focused on Eisenhower’s participation in a 1919 cross country army convoy. That experience planted the seeds of Eisenhower’s interest in improving American transport through a national road system—a project launched with the passage, during his presidency, of the National Highway Act. His book was available at the luncheon, and he gladly signed copies at the conclusion of his program.
