2023 Eisenhower Society Birthday Commemoration

On Saturday, October 14, 2023, the Society held its 53rd commemoration of Dwight D. Eisenhower’s birth. The Eisenhower Society held its annual board meeting at 10 a.m. to thank departing trustees, elect new trustees, elect new officers, and conduct society business.  At 12:00 noon a short commemorative program, scholarship presentations, and the presentation of the Samuel K. Lessey Jr. ROTC Award was held at the Dobbin House Tavern, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. A heavy rain prevented us from holding the event at the “Eisenhower at Gettysburg” statue at Gettysburg College.

Program chair Paul Shevchuk welcomed everyone to the commemoration. After the presentation of the colors by the Allied Veterans Honor Guard and the flag salute, Eisenhower Society Trustee Dr. Daun van Ee read an excerpt from Eisenhower’s letter to Private Stilian, August 23, 1951.  Trustee Priscilla Roberts presented the Brigadier General Samuel K. Lessey, Jr. ROTC Award to Jack Comegno ’24.  Acting Chairman Dr. Walton Jones announced the recipients of the Eisenhower Memorial Scholarships, funded in part by the Robert M. Hoffman Family Memorial Trust. They are Abigail Dryden ‘24, Danae Madama ‘25, Andrew Thibaudeau ’26 and Adhara Ayndrila ‘27.  Trustee Ryan Woodward read an excerpt from Eisenhower’s speech, “The Middle Way,” delivered at the Western Governors Conference, Boise, Idaho, August 20, 1952. Then Dr. Walton Jones and Susan Eisenhower, granddaughter of the President, posed by the wreath in front of the Eisenhower Society banner.  The ceremony concluded with the playing of Taps.

Following the program, the Eisenhower Society members enjoyed a fabulous buffet luncheon at the Historic Dobbin House, Gettysburg. Our luncheon speaker was Susan Eisenhower, author, and President Emerita at the Eisenhower Institute. Her talk was entitled “Contemporary Ike.”  After an excellent program, Ms. Eisenhower signed her books, How Ike Led and Mrs. Ike. Books were available for purchase at the event.

Special thanks to our sponsors, Priscilla Roberts, Col. Mary Lowe Mayhugh, Ken Weiler, Stephen Gibble, Daun van Ee, Tom Vossler, Harry Winsheimer, Ellis Grossnickle, Bruce Casner, Bill Sterrett, Gary Casteel and Ken Farabaugh.
