Program chair Paul Shevchuk welcomed everyone to the wreath laying. After the presentation of the colors by the Allied Veterans Honor Guard and the flag salute, Eisenhower Society Trustee Ken Weiler read an excerpt from Eisenhower’s book, Crusade in Europe. Trustee Priscilla Roberts presented the Major General J. Milnor Roberts ROTC Award to Kendall Nehlig ’23. They are Ethan Wilt ‘23, Abigail Dryden ‘24, Micah Smith ‘25, & Madeline Swicord ‘26. Trustee Dr. Daun van Ee read an excerpt from the commencement address that Eisenhower delivered to the Gettysburg College class of 1946. Then Vice Chairman Dr. Walton Jones and Vice President Tony TenBarge laid the wreath in front of the “Eisenhower at Gettysburg” statue. The ceremony concluded with the playing of Taps and retirement of the colors.
Following the program, the Eisenhower Society members enjoyed a fabulous buffet luncheon at the Historic Dobbin House, 89 Steinwehr Avenue, Gettysburg. Our luncheon speaker was Dr. Michael J. Birkner , Professor of History at Gettysburg College. His subject was “Eisenhower’s Recreation and Relationships.” After a delightful program, Dr. Birkner signed his new book, Democracy’s Shield: Voices of World War II for all who purchased one.
Special thanks to our sponsors, Priscilla Roberts, for covering the cost of our guest speaker’s lunch and Brigadier General Samuel K. Lessey, Jr. for covering the costs of lunch for the Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
