2024 Eisenhower Society Birthday Commemoration
On Saturday, October 12, 2024, the Society held its 54th commemoration of Dwight D. Eisenhower’s birth. The Eisenhower Society held its annual board meeting at 10 a.m. to thank departing trustees, elect new trustees, elect officers, and conduct society business. At 12:00 noon a short commemorative program, scholarship presentations, and the presentation of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Society ROTC Leadership Award was held at the “Eisenhower at Gettysburg” statue outside his retirement office on the Gettysburg College campus.
Program chair Paul Shevchuk welcomed everyone to the commemoration. After the presentation of the colors by the Allied Veterans Honor Guard and the flag salute, Eisenhower Society Trustee Dr. Daun van Ee read an excerpt from Eisenhower’s letter to Henry Luce, November 19, 1956 about nuclear war. Vice Chairman Col. Duane Williams and Trustee Col. Tom Vossler presented the ROTC Leadership Award to Cole Stauffer ’27. Chairman Dr. Walton Jones announced the recipients of the Eisenhower Memorial Scholarships, funded in part by the Robert M. Hoffman Family Memorial Trust. They are Cittlali Martinez-Gonzalez ’25, Violet Rana ’26, Pranu Bhandari ’27, and Hudson Podielsky ’28. Trustee Dr. Judy Morley read an excerpt from an article Eisenhower wrote on Leadership published in 1965. Then Dr. Walton Jones and John Burt placed the wreath at the Eisenhower statue. The ceremony concluded with the playing of Taps.
Following the program, the Eisenhower Society members enjoyed a fabulous buffet luncheon at the Historic Dobbin House, Gettysburg. Our luncheon speaker was Trustee Paul Shevchuk. His talk was entitled “The Courtship of Ike and Mamie.” It featured previously unknown stories and seldom seen photographs.
Special thanks to our sponsors: Dr. Daun van Ee, Col. Mary Lowe Mayhugh, Ken Weiler, Stephen Gibble, Col. Tom Vossler, Lt. Gen. Christopher Burne, and Steve Wiseman.
