Membership Appreciation Reception
The Dwight D. Eisenhower Society sponsored its annual Member Appreciation Reception at the Gettysburg Fire Hall on March 29. After enjoying fruit, cheese and desserts donated by the Dobbin House Tavern, and wine and Sangria donated by Duane and Linda Williams and Bob and Ruthmary McIlhenny, Program Chair Paul Shevchuk welcomed members. Chairman Walt Jones spoke about the recent death of Vice President Ruthmary McIlhenny and asked for a moment of silence in her memory. Then executive director Carol Hegeman introduced our guest speaker, Wesley Heyser. Wes was a seasonal park ranger at the Eisenhower National Historic Site for 7 years and is currently a teacher of American history. He is also a fireman with the Gettysburg Fire Department. Wes gave a short Powerpoint talk about the “General Ike” fire truck. Then guests had the opportunity to tour the fire museum and equipment bay. Thank you, sponsors: Ken and Sally Weiler and door prize donors Event Network, Ken Weiler and Carol Hegeman. We also thank volunteer firemen Jamie Gallagher, Jr., Mark Fruehan, Ken Kime, Jr., Martin Bagley and Paul McConnell who welcomed us to the museum and equipment bay and took time to explain what we were seeing. Everyone had an enjoyable afternoon.

The new Mack fire truck was named the General Ike in honor of General and President Eisenhower. The company had a tradition of naming fire trucks after generals.
This was a good color photo of the General Ike from the Powerpoint program. Note the five stars on the door.
The Gettysburg Fire Department shield says, “Fire control & rescue. We’ll be there – Fast.” The department was founded in 1808.
